Chevrolet Volt Test Drive

Yesterday, I took a drive over the Bethesda in our Chevrolet Volt Demo to see the GPS sun tracking Solar Pole car charging device installed next to Sun Trust bank 10401 Old Georgetown road.

We left Win Kelly Chevrolet Buick GMC in Clarksville Maryland and drove 95 to the beltway to Old Georgetown Road and returned. When we got there we plugged into the solar panels for 15 minutes and picked up .75 KW charge. We made it 75% of the round trip on electric only before the generator kicked in. When I arrived back at the dealership the Volt had achieved 173 miles per gallon!! Outstanding!

The Volt was fun to drive and full of technology. Quiet, great handling and very comfortable.

The ATR GPS Sun Tracking Solar Pole car charging station is the cutting edge to charge electric vehicles with renewable solar energy. Since in tracks the sun it is 35% more efficient than standard designs. 25th Annual Free State Corvette Weekend Ocean city, Maryland

Wow --- what a weekend! 660 Corvettes in a parade down the Ocean City Boardwalk. 123 Corvettes participated in the road rally. All hosted by the Free State Corvette Club for the 25th year and Win Kelly Chevrolet is the sponsor of the Free State State Corvette Club.

The really great part of this event is the money raised for Spina Bifida families. All the money donated goes to the Spina Bifida families --- 100%! The organization is run by volunteers so there is no money for admin or other costs.

I want to extend a special thanks to the Free State Corvette Club for their incredible energies for 25 years in organizing and hosting this event. It is the largest Corvette event on the east Coast. It was an amazing weekend and so rewarding on many levels. Helping people and sharing their joy while watching and sharing the pride of the Corvette owners. It reminded me of my pride in being a Chevrolet dealer for 25 years.

Win Kelly Remodeling Time, Customer experience!

Next week, we are meeting with architects and engineers to remodel our dealership to better serve our customers.

We will be redesigning all customer touch areas including the showroom, offices, service lane, waiting lounges and restrooms. Recently, we purchased and installed a new reception and computer system with mobile pads that provides express check in and pick up along with many other consumer benefits such as immediate and accurate price quotes. Historic High Trade in values

Everyone is holding onto their cars for about a year longer than is normal is recent times. As a result used vehicle supply at Win Kelly Chevrolet, Buick GMC is very tight. According to the associated press used car values are at the highest level in 16 years ---- up 30% since December 2008.

"You're not going to find a situation like this very often", says Johnathan Banks, executive auto analyst for National Automobile Dealers Association.

New Vehicle Leasing

I wanted to share a few thoughts and advantages of leasing a new vehicle verses a traditional purchase. It is interesting to note that as you move north of Baltimore and Washington, leasing accounts for up to 50% of the new car purchases. There are incentives tied to leasing from the manufacturer just like consumer rebates. However, leases are supported differently in less familiar terminology and are not as well communicated to consumers. Additionally, most dealerships (Win Kelly excluded) are not well versed in leasing and don't offer these attractive alternatives to customers.Win Kelly Chevrolet presents these alternatives along with the traditional financing options on every proposal. Right now --- the lease deals on Chevrolet, Buick and GMC are generally the better deals in terms of incentives paid, payments and cost of ownership over the term. Why is that so? Lease payments have an interest rate like bank financing but it is often disclosed as a money factor and not readily understood in the consumer sense of an interest rate. Currently --- those rates are supported by the manufacturer as low as 1.15% with many under 3% across the models lines offered. Next is the residual value of vehicles which is the value of the vehicle at the end of the term. The higher the residual value the lower the payment. With the great quality of our vehicles, residual values have risen to in many cases best in class --- again resulting in lower payments. Next is the cash incentive, generally referred to as a rebate on traditional purchases. On a lease it is referred to as CCR abbreviated for capital cost reduction. it is a term not familiar to many consumers or dealership personnel. These incentives are generally larger on leases right now than purchases. So --- right now at Win Kelly Chevrolet, Buick, GMC you get both the benefit of incentivized rates, cash rebates(CCR) and record high residuals on leases that result in very low payments relative to a purchase. Yes, there is a lease acquisition fee but this is more than offset by the stacking of incentives. There is also a lease purchase price that the lease is based on. At Win Kelly Chevrolet, Buick, GMC we use the same low price (published on our website) whether it is a lease or a purchase. There is full disclosure and transparency and full explanation to a customers comfort level. There are many factors to consider when buying a new or used vehicle. They include price, trade value, selection, vehicle features and detailed financing/leasing options. Unfortunately, other than vehicle price most of this information is not conveniently available on the web. This makes gathering the information to consider a purchase very difficult without the tedious visits to the dealership. The traditional info gathering process for consumers considering a vehicle purchase has not progressed as it has in nearly every other consumer item. It is generally not consumer friendly and reflective of the new technologies that provide information, save time and add convenience.

Snow Roads

A special Thanks to all of the roads crews who cleared the roads after this storm. I was out at 6 am this morning and the roads were open. It is hard to believe after coming in last night with abandoned cars everywhere and snow coming down heavy that such a huge job got done so well and so quickly.

We take it for granted the intense effort that gets this done for all of us as residents and businesses. Our Snow Crew at Win Kelly Chevrolet Buck GMC has done a great job too. There has been a lot of press and marketing questions raised about the affect of consumers consideration of purchasing Chevrolet, Buick and GMC products since the bailout and subsequent successful stock offering. As a GM dealer, we are very interested in how this may affect our business and ultimately strategies to overcome any residual negative implications.

We have been a GM dealer for 25 years and at throughout that time there has been a consensus that the market is product driven and the best products win. Now, as a GM dealer we have the best products in 25 years and category after category award winning entries as judged by third parties such as J.D Power, Consumer Reports, various buff magazines and many other independent publications. Chevrolet won Motor Trends "Car of the Year" in 2008 with Malibu and again in 2010 with Volt. The new Buck Regal, Lucerne and Chevrolet Cruze are getting rave reviews. Although sales are up 50% at our dealership, we still feel that in head to head categories there is tremendous potential for increases.

General Motors Milford Proving Grounds/Lansing Delta Assembly Plant --- an untold story

I (Kevin Bell, Dealer, Win Kelly Chevrolet, Buick, GMC) just returned from a trip to General Motors Lansing Delta Assembly plant and the famous Milford Proving Grounds. After touring the stamping plant for Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and the Buick Enclave, we then toured the final assembly plant. Next we drove the finished product at the famous General Motors Milford proving grounds.

What an eye opening experience! I have been a General Motors dealer for 24 years and I have never been more confident and more excited about the future of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and our dealership. It was amazing. I will try to share some of my experiences in words --- but it leaves a lot out that you must see to appreciate.

See below for my observations and thoughts:

The stamping plant for the vehicle parts was an amazing demonstration of manufacturing efficiency. A flat piece of metal goes in one side and about two minutes later with 5 stamps comes out an intricate finished product.
The organization and care was exceptional. The logistics, quality and overall efficiency was amazing. It was so well organized that there was no stress in the air.
The robots and assembly line was a work in industrial art. It made Willy Wonka's factory look obsolete.
The final assembly plant is remarkable in it's efficiency and inclusive operation of all aspects both human, industrial and environmental. The plant is the only 100% Gold Level LEEDS certified automotive plant in the world. They collect rain water for use in the plant plumbing, lights automatically turn off at break time, the associates ride along with the vehicle on a moving platform to perform their jobs, each employee rotates thru five jobs on their team.
Quality control is tantamount with each employee treating the next person and station down the line as their customer and delivering an exceptional quality job to each.
The plants are spotlessly clean. You CAN eat off the floor. Brightly lit with low energy use lighting. Literally comfortable environment -- you don't believe you are in a factory. If factories were always like this then Bruce Springsteen would have needed another subject for his songs. I came away ready to deliver the message at our dealership that we can improve our housekeeping if the can do this in a FACTORY.
The employees were friendly, cheerful, proud and happy to show us their factory. You could feel the goodwill in the air.

This may seem like hyperbole but I assure you it is not. It is an untold story in the media and should be shared. World Class manufacturing --- as efficient and environmentally sound as any in the world building World Class products Traverse, Acadia and Enclave.

Next we went to the famous GM Milford proving grounds. Established in 1924, it is a 4000 acre complex dedicated to developing and testing General Motors cars and technology. It is an amazing complex. Following are some of my experiences there:

We dragged raced the new GMC Sierra 1 ton dually Duramax diesel up a 17% grade with an 8000 lb trailer against the equivalent Ford and Dodge. The GMC toasted the Dodge by 75 feet and steadily pulled away from the Ford. See official results at pickups.com.
The GMC was much quieter than both the Dodge and Ford.
We then went to black lake. A stretch of pavement so large it looks like a lake for some performance driving. We drove the new 2011Regal Turbo and compared against Audi, Acura and others. It was no comparison. The Regal felt faster and much more secure in the turns and slalom. The suspension stayed put with less wheel hop and body sway. You felt in control.
They had a professional driver that took you on hot laps. Going into the first turn at a speed I knew we would role over in ---- my only reaction was like Butch and Sundance jumping over the cliff "OH S---". We made the with the Regal Turbo staying flat and accelerating to the next turn and slalom. I got out of the Regal and had to take a look to convince myself that I just got out of a Sport Sedan and not a Corvette or other high performance sports car. It was that remarkable.

I came away from the day thinking that this is an untold story of General Motors. World Class Manufacturing facilities, World Class Products produced in the US by American Workers who are motivated and clearly enthused. We met a lot of General Motors management and they were engaged with us, clearly excited, highly informed, open and motivated. I came away thinking how does this very positive message get out there not only for GM's interest but for the overall U.S. interests to clearly demonstrate that we are more than competitive ---- that we are winning. That General Motors is producing segment and industry leading products in the United States. I came away feeling great about being a GM dealer and most bullish on our future prospects. It was Cool!

I appreciated the opportunity and if anyone ever has the chance to do a tour either as an automotive buff, an economic buff or a manufacturing interest --- you should take it. It is an Untold Story!

Win Kelly Chevrolet Buick, GMC continued it's decade of support for Howard County Maryland's 4H program. We purchased a pig and a steer at 4H auction Friday evening. We send it up to the Mt. Airy meat locker to have it butchered and reward exemplary employees and associates.

Clunkers --- Was it Successful?

On the surface, the Cash For Clunker Programs seem like a big success --- but was it? Time will tell but it I think it was an ill conceived program that has more negative effects than the short term positive sales it created.

Why would I say that when we sold 56 cars under the terms of the program. Here is my reasoning:

Dealers have not been paid and have an extraordinary effort to process the deals. It has had a huge negative effect on cash flow.
The economy in general and the auto business in particular needs consistency and predictability more than anything. This program was like playing poker with extra wild cards.
Dealers did not have trade ins which are a profit center for dealers and especially needed low cost transportation for consumers.
Used care prices already were increasing due to low supply. The Clunker program destroyed 600,000 serviceable vehicles and will increase used car prices further for consumers. Future used car consumers are going to pay a LOT more for a used car. I just came from the auction inn Orlando, Fla. The prices were out of the book. Auction prices were opening higher than my research showed I would pay at the end of the bidding. Crazy -- out of the book. Consumers will be hurt. It is market manipulation.
Our techs and staff were sick over destroying these very serviceable automobiles. Just sick.
Most of the business and money on new vehicle sales went out of the country to foreign manufacturers. Domestic dealers especially GM and Chrysler did not have inventory to sell due to the plant closings during the bankruptcies. The imports had a HUGE built in advantage. Dumb timing at best --- really though, just plain dumb.

I think the market after this unnecessary invasive manipulation will take months to settle down. After Dealer termination letters, record low sales and manufacturer bankruptcies. The economy needs consistency and predictability --- not hocus, pocus gimmicks. That is not sound business.

Those are my observations. Short term sales --- long term losses for dealers and consumers and the overall economy.

Win Kelly GM Superstores had an All Employee event meeting to outline our plans for the future. Win Kelly Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, GMC with the help of consultants Dealer-FX over the past 90 days conducted a very intensive Strategic planning review. In spite of the difficult market conditions and GM struggles it was quite eye opening as it showed there is a tremendous amount of Sales, Service, Parts and Collision Center opportunities.

We closed the dealership for the evening and provided dinner for all of our staff. We then had a comprehensive presentation of the plans for each department and specifically outlined how we would achieve them. Our Sales in service are actually increased year to year along with parts and body shop. New vehicle sales was down but not that much. A big emphasis was on where are the opportunities and there were a lot of areas identified.

It comes down to excellent customer service to retain your customers and targeted marketing. There is a big emphasis on digital, internet initiatives to reach the consumer. Big, Big Night

Win Kelly GM Superstore unveiled the 2010 Camaro Wednesday night at 7:30 pm in the showroom. The event was scheduled for 7 pm but people started showing up at 6 pm. Even with the rain we had over 400 people in the showroom and a buzz of excitement. At 7:40 I gave a short talk on the history of the Camaro and Win Kelly's long 22 years association with the Maryland Camaro Club.

The event was attended by customers, enthustiasts business friends and associates, GM executives and employees.

We had a showroom stock Camaro from each generation in the showroom along with the 2010 Camaro SS which was purchased by a Maryland Camaro Club member and driven off the showroom floor into the driving rain. We also sold Two(2) -- LT Camaros and those new Win Kelly Customers took the covers off in the rain and drove them home. Three other orders were taken for Camaro's along with a sold Malibu, Cobalt and Traverse.

The food was great, the show was exceptional, the music fun and the camaraderie a blast.

Thanks to all who attended and special thanks to the Maryland Camaro Club, The Freesate Corvette Club and The Late Great Chevy Club.

GM Bankruptcy or Reinvention

Out of the ashes rises the phoenix. GM has a great opportunity (although exceptionally painful for many families) to recreate a financially viable company.

I think it is important to distinguish between financially viable and the quality of their products. They are very different questions. Financially they are wounded with high legacy costs, non competitive union contracts that management agreed to in better times (it's not the unions fault management agreed to these contracts, poor management decisions and too much debt all exacberated by a tanking economy. These can and will be fixed either by negotiation assisted by the deadline President Obama set or thru the bankruptcy process. This will be resolved sooner than later and that is good news for GM, the U.S. and most importantly the employees and families.

Now the other side ---- GM's products. Simply put they are the best they have ever been and competitive with any products produced in the world. Great Quality, unmatched fuel economy and offerings across all segments that Americans want. Malibu --- Car of the year; CTS --- Car of the Year 2007, Buick -- #1 in Quality, Silverado --- the best full size pick up, Traverse, Enclave ---- tearing up the crossover segment. Then a lot of new product coming. A small crossover from GMC, the new 2010 LaCrosse ---- America is in for a treat, the new Chevrolet Cruze --- bigger than a Civic -- smaller than an Accord and 45 miles per gallon. GM engineers and designers have been lauded as the Best in the world for many years and now they are retaking that position.

The Product revolution began at GM a few years ago and it is gaining momentum and this story should be told along side of the financial mess. THIS IS A BIG STORY. It is why GM will be a Power again once the finance side is fixed.

ZERO Percent --- best value?

At Win Kelly GM Superstore, 0% financing for up to 60 months is back!! However, is it really the best value? When the customer opts for the 0% financing they give up the large cash incentives that are deducted from the price of the vehicle. With the 0% you get the large financing savings but you give up the cash discount up front.

As you make the decision on which way to go (0% vs. cash rebate) you should evaluate the payment at market rate interest with the lower unpaid balance due to the cash incentive and the payment foregoing the cash incentive and taking the 0%. An additional consideration that is important is that the cash is up front lowering the balance due on the vehicle. You only get the full benefit of the 0% over the term of the loan. If you trade the car before the loan is matured you lose that portion of the benefit. The same is true if the vehicle is stolen or totaled in an accident. This could lead to a higher loan payoff than the insurance company will settle for since the balance due was not reduced by the up front cash incentive.

So --- look at all scenario's before deciding that 0% is best.

I am pricing out a new Yukon XL SLT this morning and I am amazed at the deal. A $55,000 MSRP vehicle is being delivered for just under $39,000.00 ---- a $16,000.00 discount.

How? What's the story?

First we have supplier pricing which Win Kelly GM superstore is discounting another five percent -- then $7500.00 worth of GM incentives. Then Win Kelly GM Superstore has a special additional $2000.00 dealer incentive that we are passing along to the customer. Our thoughts on the Federal Auto Manufacturer Assistance

Win Kelly GM Superstore has some thoughts on the Auto Manufacturer Federal assistance. The reality from my point of view is that if the domestic manufacturer dealers sold more vehicles they would order more from the manufacturer and that would create revenue for the manufacturer ---- then they would need less assistance from the government. Unfortunately, if assistance is given only to the manufacturers it does not spur consumers to buy vehicles and may not address the underlying problem of slow sales in this economy. Dealers are not helped and dealership jobs are still threatened with many dealers closing with job losses. The consumer has no additional motivation to purchase a vehicle and create sales for the dealer and manufacturer thus addressing the underlying problem.

So ---- what do you do that helps the Manufacturer, the consumer and the beat up dealer. The federal Government and state governments should immediately offer a very large direct tax credit ($4000 to $5000) for anyone buying a domestic car. It will help the manufacturer since dealers will order cars, it will help the dealer to sell vehicles and maintain their workforces and it will help the consumer with affording a new vehicle as the American fleet is growing old. The additional benefit is that generally the new vehicles will be better fuel economy vehicles. Tax incentives have been used many times in our American history with great success. GM is producing the best vehicles ever and this will be a great way to get these vehicles in consumers homes and take back some of the lost market share. GM has more vehicles over 30MPG than any manufacturer and they lead in mileage in almost every vehicle segment. Everyone benefits.

It is also an important National Security issue to maintain a strong manufacturing base in case the country ever needs it. I would hate to go to Toyota in a national emergency and ask them if we could borrow their domestic plants for a while.

Motorcycle Service

Win Kelly is now Servicing Motorcycles in their shop. Of Win Kelly's 15 technicians 5 of them are highly skilled Motorcycle technicians and enthusiasts. I also recently bought a new Yamaha. The techs own various bikes but have many Harley's. Lynne who runs the Service Office staff also Owns a Harley.

We noticed that there are very few Motorcycle Service Shops in the area and with our expertise on staff Win Kelly recognized we could fill a need in the Motorcycle Community. There will be a web landing page up soon with prices on the services and additional information.

As we go forward next spring we will have some Dealership Events and get-togethers to meet other Motorcycle Riders in the area.

We will post some pictures in the next week so you can begin to get to know our Staff and their bikes.
